The Cape Winelands may be known for its award-winning wine farms, but many also visit this part of Cape Town for its exhilarating family-friendly experiences.

The Giraffe House

Located about 35km outside of Cape Town, the Giraffe House is open daily and offers animal encounters at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. Take along your own picnic but no alcohol is allowed. Apart from giraffes, you can also see zebras, caracals, meerkats, and crocodiles.

Polkadraai Farm

Expect bucketloads of fun at Polkadraai Farm. The Stellenbosch-based strawberry farm features a range of activities including tractor rides, a bike park, mini-golf, pony rides, face painting, and strawberry picking (available from September). There is ample space for kids to play with colourful scarecrows dotted along the lush greenery.

Spier Wine Farm

Spier Wine Farm has tailored itself to offer a complete family experience, featuring everything from grape juice tasting and picnics to mountain bike trails, the Elemental Play Garden, and vineyard Segway tours. The wine farm also boasts many foodie spots to enjoy once you’ve worked up an appetite.

Exotic Animal World

Exotic Animal World (previously Butterfly World) is home to free-flying exotic butterflies, sure to be a hit with both kids and adults. Enjoy animal displays or grab a bite to eat at their in-house eatery called Café Lemur, which serves hot drinks, meals, and cakes. From the restaurant, you can enjoy views of their rescue parrots, Ring-Tailed lemurs, Bourke’s parakeets, chinchillas, and doves.

Farm Sanctuary

Farm Sanctuary aims to awaken connection between farm animals and visitors and inspire a positive change in the way society views and treats farmed animals. This unique attraction also allows you the opportunity to sleep in a bar with rescued farmed animals, wine tasting in a barn, and a plant-based café.

Huguenot Fine Chocolates

The kids will love Huguenot Fine Chocolates, located on the main street of Franschhoek. You can indulge in a range of chocolates, made from the finest imported Belgian chocolate. Try their Chocolate Experience, a half-hour programme of tasting, demonstrations, and the history of chocolate making.
